100 Issues Ago May 2011

I came across this “100 Issues Ago” panel in an old JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA and thought I’d tidy it up and re-purpose it. If one month = one issue, what was I reading 100 Issues Ago?

I had plenty of problems with Judd Winick’s writing on both JUSTICE LEAGUE: GENERATION LOST and POWER GIRL that he was writing at the time of this issue, but I had to pull this one out for this episode of 100 Issues Ago mainly for the cover and Wonder Woman’s trousers – or pants as they say in America.

Jim Lee had redesigned Wonder Woman’s costume and, I think, there was some new storyline about how people either forgot who she was, or there was a different timeline or something where she hadn’t been around – this was pre-New 52 so I don’t think it hung around for long. But the thing that made the internet go crazy was the fact that he gave her long pants in the redesign.

I vaguely remembered writing about it on my old blog and so did a quick search and found I’d captured some comments from DC’s old blog The Source (no longer available) which summarised the reaction:

she didn’t need to be redesigned for the modern era.
Wonder Woman is a global icon. you can’t change her look anymore than you can change Batman’s or Superman’s.
i don’t know who that’s supposed to be in that costume, but it sure isn’t Wonder Woman.

I actually just threw up… how dare you do this. THIS IS DISGRACEFUL. I hope you lose the rights to WW. I am now done collecting comics. GOOD JOB!

I said at the time and it still cracks me up that “thebigburton” tells us he’s feeling ill at 6:45, goes (hopefully) to the bathroom, throws up, then comes back to tell everyone at 7:01!

Ah, comic fandom . . .

  1. Now that’s dedication to hating something. I mean if thebigburton puked based off her pants, I can imagine what he did to himself during the Phew 52 reboot. He probably killed himself and blogged about it.

      Man, I don’t think I’ve ever felt that strongly about anything that, let’s face it, is fun but transient. Our hobby is reading about men and women with superpowers, for Cthulhu’s sake! I love it still after all these years but if tomorrow DC announced that they were trashing their superhero line and replacing it with monthly comics about ship building, I’d just stop buying them – I wouldn’t rant and rave or throw up and tell people I have!

  3. I think the pants were part of a story J. Michael Straczynski wrote, where yeah, everyone forgot Wonder Woman for some reason. This was at the same time JMS wrote that Superman story where he walks around the country because he decides he isn’t in touch with humanity enough or something (which JMS abandoned halfway through).

    Anyway, the only new addition to my pull list in May of 2011 was Rocketeer Adventures, which was a kind of anthology mini-series thing with two or three short stories in each issue by different creative teams. Issue 1 had a story written and drawn by John Cassaday, another one by Mike Allred, and the third was by Kurt Busiek and Mike Kaluta. I think I liked the Cassaday one best (my review at the time is extremely vague and unhelpful), because it was fairly straightforward action.

    Also, May was the last issue of REBELS, which I believe got canceled to free up some space for all the tie-in Flashpoint mini-series that would be starting in June. Aren’t you so excited to talk about Flashpoint next month?!

    1. I’d forgotten Straczynski wrote Wonder Woman for a spell – I vaguely remember the Superman storyline (was it called Grounded?). I think he wrote some of the relaunched THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD as well before he just up and left.

      Aren’t you so excited to talk about Flashpoint next month?!

      I feel a new feature starting: 200 Issues Ago!
