That does bring up an interesting point/question; why haven’t the Avengers ever crossed paths with Fu Manchu? Not high profile enough? I’d think if Red Skull rates being worthy of their attention time & time again why not Shang-Chi’s dad? 🤷♂️
Both, actually. Nowadays it’s the race angle but the character was licensed by Marvel at the time, leading to him being used as Shang-Chi’s father if memory serves.
Marvel did have Yellow Claw, who would have the same race issues but not the rights issues. Jeff Parker reworked him (and re-titled him Master Plan or Golden Claw) for Agents of Atlas.
Of course, he got eaten by a dragon at the end of that mini-series, but it’s comics. There’s ways around that!

Didn’t the character get renamed/retconned due to either copyright issues or simply terribly racist portrayals in the original martial?

Marvel didn’t own the rights to Fu Manchu, so they changed the name to Zheng Zu.

Ah, licensing – that was it. Kinda of like how no-one in the DCU talked about Pater Cannon, Thunderbolt after the mid 90s or so.
