DARK CRISIS: YOUNG JUSTICE #5
Mickey Mxyzptlk tells Robin, Superboy and Impulse that he has created this world for them so that they can relive and enjoy the times in their lives when they were at their best. He claims they were betrayed by their mentors – Batman, Superman, and the Flash – and replaced with younger versions of them, that the originals couldn’t compete with.
Mickey rants that the three heroes have been forgotten or side-lined in favour of newer heroes that haven’t been around as long and that he wants things to go back to how they were. Robin, Superboy, and Impulse disagree with him, saying the newer heroes have just as much right to exist as anyone else, and that Mickey doesn’t get to decide who lives or dies.
Disgusted by their stance, Mickey turns on them, changing the floor to lava. Robin finds a hidden bomb in his costume and hurls it at the fake Wonder Girl. As the bomb explodes, a sucker-headed arrow hits Wonder Girl on the head, and a second later the Invisible Jet with Cassie, Cissie and Red Tornado arrives.
Impulse explains that he had earlier sent a message via soundwaves, pitched at just the right frequency for Cassie to find it – this was the red glow that she saw in the previous issue – and the explosion of Robin’s bomb helped bring them through[1] .
The fake Wonder Girl attacks Cassie who, with a clap of thunder, makes her fade away. Mickey has the ground change into glowing blobs that attack the heroes. The team help each other before Cassie suggests Impulse could take the team through the speed force if he had more power. With Red Tornado and Superboy giving him a boost, they’re able to form a portal from the fifth dimension and return to the Happy Harbor headquarters.
Before they can do anything else, Mickey arrives looking for revenge.
[1] Because this is comics and somehow that makes sense.
