Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part 2

The animated film Superman: Man of Tomorrow was released in 2020 and became the first in a series of connected animated films with a shared universe and characters, dubbed the Tomorrowverse. In 2024, the Tomorrowverse would face it’s biggest threat, the Crisis on Infinite Earths, with the event taking place over three films. A link to the summary of part 1 is here.

Part Two begins with the Joker assaulting the Monitor’s vibrational tower on Earth 2, despite it being heavily guarded by troops and Batman. A Jokerized version of Jim Gordon attacks first as a diversion, but dies before Batman can save him. The real Joker arrives in a tank along with Killer Croc and Solomon Grundy who deal with the troops before turning their attention to Batman. The Joker wants to destroy the tower just to prove whether its destruction would herald the end of the world, but is stopped by Robin and the Huntress of Earth-2 arriving to help Batman, before they too are joined by Robin (Damian) and Batgirl, and Batman Beyond. Between them, the heroes take down Joker and the others, despite Batman not wanting their help.

The Psycho Pirate sits in a darkened room with an emaciated male prisoner who says nothing. Taking that as his cue, the Pirate talks about his childhood and how he was able to amplify the emotions of others, accidentally sending his parents into an almost murderous rage.

Aboard the Monitor’s satellite, Mar Novu dispassionately watches the destruction of Krypton when a piece of debris becomes locked in the satellite’s proximity; debris which turns out to be a lifeboat and contains Kara Zor-El suffocating. The Monitor has his satelite remove it, but the satellite brings it aboard, allowing Kara the chance to escape, even though she is dying of radiation poisoning. Unwilling to have her die aboard his craft, Mar Novu has the satellite deal with her.

The Pirate’s parents send him to a boarding school in Bavaria where he is bullied by his classmates.

To the Monitor’s disgust, the satellite attempts to heal Kara, but she is too traumatised to even eat. Prompted by the satellite’s suggestion, the Monitor eats with Kara which triggers a response in her, and she begins to eat.

Bullied beyond his limit, the Pirate learns to control his powers to use one of his bullies to kill another. Slowly, he takes over the school and learns that the more people feeling the same emotion together eases his pain.

Kara speaks with the Monitor and learns of his mission to witness celestial events, and he tells her who she is, but that she cannot return home as he needs her help; when asked if she can return later, he tells her “perhaps”, even though he knows Krypton was destroyed.

At the boarding school, the Bavarian police arrive when no word has been received from the school, and they find the teachers hanging from the ceiling, with the pupils all controlled by the Pirate.

Kara finds her way to the hangar bay and her escape pod, which prompts her memories to begin returning and when she asks to return to Krypton, the escape pod shows her the record of Krypton’s destruction.

Grown older, the Pirate takes command of a Nazi boat employed to destroy allied ships, but his ship is sunk during a storm. He makes the other survivors jump overboard, ensuring he is the only one left. While he thought he might die adrift in the ocean, he reached out with his mind one last time and was rescued by Atlanteans. They took him to meet Aquaman who resisted the Pirate’s mental controls at first, until he was weakened by his own men, allowing the Pirate to control him.

Kara confronts the Monitor about recovering her memories and his inactivity when witnessing Krypton’s destruction, crying that he has kept her as little more than a pet or a prisoner, the last Kryptonian. Mar Novu reveals Superman’s existence on Earth which infuriates her even more, and Kara sets out to become the opposite of the Monitor by actively interfering.

The Pirate asks his prisoner why he remains silent and attempts to control him, but is unable to do so. The man wakes of his own accord and gives the Pirate the ability to move between realities, at the same time freeing himself and becoming Dr Fate. The Pirate rejects Fate’s gift, but Fate forces him to take it all the same. The scene reverts back to the cell where the prisoner sits motionless once more, the Pirate demanding that the guards let him out.

Aboard the satellite, the Monitor watches the anti-matter wave tearing through other realities, before realising that the satellite is watching Kara’s exploits in the 30th Century and, though the Monitor knows her task is hopeless, he admires her tenacity and ability to beat the odds. Returning to Earth to find her cousin, Kara is abducted by the Monitor and returned to the satellite where Mar Novu tells her of the impending Crisis and how Kara’s influence and example has convinced him it is worth trying to stop the anti-matter wave. The Monitor gives her a portion of his life energy, transforming her into Harbinger.

On another Earth, the Pirate wakes amidst destruction, being hunted by that world’s Flash. He uses a spell ro hide from the speedster, and finds himself inhabiting the body of his doppleganger on another Earth, one where he is the ruler of a people that have turned against him. Harbinger arrives, knowing of his ability to move between Earths, and tells him that the Monitor can help them save all universes.

The heroes continue monitoring the surviving universes and power up the vibrationary towers. On one Earth after another, the heroes start the towers and the anti-matter wave moves through them, universe by universe. On Earth-17, the tower overheats and the Superman watching that tower calls for help. The Monitor sends Kara – as Supergirl, not Harbinger – to help out and between them, they get the tower back online just in time. Kara struggles with the loss of Brainiac, Dawnstar and the 30th century, and is still angry with the Monitor for doing nothing to save Krypton.

Kamandi is sent to his own Earth to repair the tower on that Earth and is joined by Slovar. Kamandi doesn’t realise that the great ape is not part of the apes who have hunted him throughout his life.

Elsewhere on the satellite, the Psycho Pirate is being used by the Monitor to broadcast peace and calm across the remaining Earths and claims he is unable to continue, and begs the Monitor to be given some of Mar Novu’s power to allow him to continue. He double bluffs the Monitor – knowing Mar Novu can see his past as a villain – but the Monitor grants him the power regardless, having faith it will be used wisely.

Mr Terrific reviews what the heroes have learned about the anti-matter waves, and how they are unpredictable, leading them to consider the possibility that someone or something is behind it. Mr Terrific suggests moving the worlds to “neverspace”, somewhere beyond the reach of the anti-matter wave, but the Monitor says the power needed is too much.

Blue Beetle confronts the Psycho Pirate as he knew him on his own world as Dr Spectro, and threatens to tell the other heroes that Pirate cannot be trusted. Pirate uses his enhanced powers to convince Beetle that he is trustworthy before he is suddenly taken from the satellite against his will.

In another universe, Hawkman notices another wave is arriving, this one more intense than before, just as another arrives at Earth-1. On Earth-2, Batman reports that the wave was a blinding light, as other Earths report the same. In the aftermath of those waves, Shadow Demons emerge to attack the defenders of the towers on all Earths.

The Psycho Pirate is suspended in blackness and interrogated by a voice that asks why Pirate is helping the others, in particular the Monitor. When asked for a name, the voice claims to be nothing like the Monitor, leading the Pirate to give the voice the name of Anti-Monitor. The voice asks the Pirate to try and change how the people of the Earths feel, and offers him a universe of his own to control the emotions of its people as he wishes, to become their god.

On the multiple Earths, the heroes make their stand against the Shadow Demons. Aboard the satellite, the realisation is made that each of the Demons is part of a single creature, and the Monitor agrees now that the attacks are being controlled by a guiding force. Hippolyta calls from Earth-46 saying their tower needs reinforcements, and the Wonder Woman of Earth-2 decides to head to that Earth to help.

On Earth-2, Batman holds his own against the Demons before the other members of the Bat-family arrive to help out. He passes on the information that light is to be used agaisnt the Demons.

On Kamandi’s Earth, the tower is attacked by the Demons again and he and Solovar protect it as much as they can before they are both wounded, Solovar mortally.

Wonder Woman fights on Earth-46, with Diana using the light from her lasso to drive the Demons back. Despite their similarities, Wonder Woman and Hippoltya clash on how the men are dealt with on this Earth, but they form an uneasy alliance.

Supergirl bumps into the Psycho Pirate who suggests that the Demons are responsible for the destruction of the 30th Century, pushing Supergirl towards wanting revenge for her lost friends. At the urging of the Anti-Monitor, Psycho Pirate begins projecting anger towards the Earths.

Supergirl arrives on Earth-1 where the heroes are starting to bicker. She attacks the Shadow Demons but suffers a vision of her dead mother, along with Brainiac and Dawnstar, before Psycho Pirate joins her on the Monitor’s satellite as Mar Novu watches the destruction of Krypton once more. The Anti-Monitor’s voice tells her that the Monitor has witness almost every calamity, implying that he is responsible for them. The Anti-Monitor tells her to strike the Monitor down, with the Pirate telling her she can save the universe by doing this.

The Bat family fight amongst themselves, spurred on by Psycho Pirate’s attack. On Earth-46, Diana suggests the men imprisoned by the Amazon would be a help in their battle, but Hippolyta would rather die before arming them. Green Lantern and Dr Light fight each other before Lantern recovers due to a knock on the head. John Constantine arrives at the end of the fight.

The Monitor confronts Pyscho Pirate as he broadcasts hate and fear across the Earths. The Pirate reveals he now has another option, given to him by the Anti-Monitor, just as the latest anti-matter wave arrives, and with that, the Pirate vanishes.

John Constantine stops fighting Green Lantern long enough to charge up the tower on their Earth, as Batman does the same on Earth-2, while Earth-46 and the Amazons falls to the anti-matter wave, as does Wonder Woman.

At the satellite, the Spectre arrives and speaks with the Monitor, telling him that Mar Novu has absorbed galactic power since the dawn of time, and that he must pay for his crimes when the time comes.

Constantine goads Green Lantern and, as Lantern tells him Green Lantern is his job, and his name is actually John, that revelation allows Constantine to remember his own name and who he is. With a click of his fingers, he reverts back to his normal look. Lantern over charges his power battery to drive back the Demons before Constantine grabs the batter and hurls it at the Demons before it explodes, leaving Lantern powerless.

On Earth-2, the heroes still fight each other with Batman finally falling and being dragged back into the Demons, which pushes the Bat family to shake off their hatred and help him. As the Demons disappear, Batman realises they’ve changed their target and requests the satellite to divert all operatives to Earth-1.

The heroes converge on Earth-1 as the Shadow Demons merge into a single, giant entity that looms over the city, which they with light.

At the satellite, the Monitor understands he was wrong, with the Spectre saying that because of the Monitor’s mistake, everything in all realities is about to die. The Monitor tells him he would give anything to save them, just as Supergirl arrives, her anger increased by the Psycho Pirate, as she uses heat vision against him.

On Earth, the Shadow Demon creature grows armour around itself .

On the satellite, Supergirl realises what she has done and snaps out of her rage.

The Shadow Demon creates a ball of anti-matter energy and holds it above the heroes before speaking with the Anti-Monitor’s voice, telling them to “Die!”
