All good things come to an end, but not all ends are good ones. Someday I’ll look up why Conway decided to use the particular cast he did aside from the obvious fact that he hade more say over the development of those characters compared to the other more iconic members. Regardless, I can see why most people hated that era & while some others liked it.
I captured part of an interview with Conway on this page where he states he wasn’t happy with the characters after a while; I’m also waiting for DC FINEST: JLOA THE RETURN to come out this week which has all of the Detroit League stuff, and hoping for an intro/background piece about it, hopefully with something from Conway.
I’ve always had a soft spot for the Detroit League, though.
Partly because I can’t help but like the underdog, partly because this era was one of the first where I was able to get my hands on several consecutive issues at the time. Where I lived in the UK in the 80s we didn’t have a comic shop so were reliant on the local newsagent (I think grocers/general store would be the US equivalent) stocking American comics. They would only have random titles and issues, you couldn’t order them in advance, so it was very much you had to take what they had to offer.
I’d read lots of JLA and GREEN LANTERN by this point (again, random issues) and missed the whole of CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, but for some reason my local newsagent ended up with a good run of the Detroit era League, some as regular monthly deliveries, most as a job-lot of back issues I found there. So getting to read continuing stories of these heroes instead of random episodes helped me get attached to them. 😊

There’s always something for someone. But why the appeal for you?

Totally understandable. I can definitely see why now.
