Three times a week I randomly generate two dates, hunt down covers from those dates and then mash them together and force the results on you lovely people, while giving a hat-tip to the wonderful Super-Team Family blog which has been doing this for years (and a lot better) on an almost daily basis.
I remember buying the FATE comic in the 90s after ZERO HOUR launched it; I have a fondness for Dr Fate and wanted it to be better than it was. Even so, killing Jared Stevens off in the first issue or so of JSA seemed a rough deal.

It really did didn’t it? I checked that Zero issue out, and I think I liked the Manhunter one better.
But yeah Jared deserved better than he did. If only he had better writers to work with him. Who knows.
Still, the fact that there was such a massive departure from the regular Dr. Fate concept, and it the whole Fate project was doomed from the start.

I recently bought the whole of the FATE series on Comixology – it definitely suffers from being a 90s title, all “edgy” art and pouches galore. It’s good to try new things with characters every now and then, but like you say, departing so far from the original did sort of doom it.

And now that I think about Manhunter and the whole “Musician doubling as a super-hero” bit either predates Malibu comics’ Night Man or happened around the same time right?
