100 Issues Ago January 2012

I came across this “100 Issues Ago” panel in an old JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA and thought I’d tidy it up and re-purpose it. If one month = one issue, what was I reading 100 Issues Ago?

The solicitation for this series had caught my eye, promising a blend of crime noir and Lovecraftian horror so picking this up was an easy decision to make. And I wasn’t disappointed; FATALE would go on to be one of the best stories I’ve read in a long while and this was a good first issue.

Meanwhile, DC were into month 5 of the New 52 and, as I mentioned last month, some titles were starting to plod and slow down (CAPTAIN ATOM and FURY OF FIRESTORM: THE NUCLEAR MEN chief among them) while others (FRANKENSTEIN: AGENT OF SHADE and DEMON KNIGHTS) were rewarding the risk I’d take on picking them up outside the usual Justice League/Green Lantern family of titles that I would normally pick up.

Dynamite had THE BOYS and Marvel had PUNISHER: MAX, both of which were doing splendid work.

  1. I’ve never been able to get into Brubaker’s writing, outside of his collaboration with Matt Fraction on Immortal Iron Fist. I like noir stuff, but as movies or prose, not comics, apparently. The book switched artists and I was apparently not a fan of Fernando Blanco’s art.

Nothing much new for me in January. Angel & Faith still going. Resurrection Man is the only DC book I was buying at this point (think that changes in February), and Mitch was fighting with angels by this point. Legion of Monsters wrapped up, Avengers Solo is almost done, so is Villains for Hire.

Got a couple of issues of the Matt Fraction Defenders book, and Daredevil was doing a one-month crossover with Amazing Spider-Man, so I bought both those issues. It’s one of my least favorite of Waid’s Daredevil books, but I’ve never enjoyed the way Spidey always gets stuck playing Daffy Duck to Daredevil’s Bugs Bunny somehow.

    1. FATALE is the only thing I’ve read by him, to be honest – he’s one of those writers that I’ve been aware of but never really picked anything up by until this, and it was the more horror/Lovecraft elements I was intrigued by.

Spidey always gets stuck playing Daffy Duck to Daredevil’s Bugs Bunny somehow” – haha! That’s a great description!
