Mash-Up #53

Twice a week I randomly generate two dates and then compare the titles I own from both of them, trying to find some covers that, with a little basic photoshopping, I can mash together, and then I force the results on you lovely people.

By the way, I admit to being HUGELY influenced by the wonderful Super-Team Family blog which has been doing this for years (and a lot better) on an almost daily basis.

Ah, Ambush Bug. No room for him in the post-New 52/Rebirth DCU, I’m afraid.

And poor old Conner Hawke – we barely knew ye . . .

  1. Yeah, even more so Kyle, Conner really did seem to get the shaft (no pun intended or did I?) by DC once they brought back dear old dad. I think Conner Kent the 90’s Superboy is another Conner who got the short end of the proverbial shaft after Infinite Crisis and Flashpoint, and even more so now that Jon Kent has made a possible return redundant.

Ambush Bug was given a bit part in the NU52 mock news ads, but that’s it.
When DC briefly tried out comedy books, Irwin had a shot, but alas, no one other than Giffen seems to show him any real love @DC these days.

Cool cover btw. Really creative. It definitely looks like you took time on this.

    1. Yeah, Kyle was lucky in the he continues to this day, helped I guess that he’s part of an organisation so one more Green Lantern didn’t matter. Poor old Conner, though, he had no real hope of staying around was Ollie was back in the game.

Glad you liked the cover – honestly, this one took next to no time! 🙂

      1. Really? Definitely looks like it was a bit of an involved process. Cool.
Yeah he really didn’t and it certainly doesn’t look like Connor’s on anybody’s radar over there for now. Maybe in another 5-10 years he will, if he’s not brought back just to be horrifically killed off again.

      2. Thanks but it was one of the easiest I’ve done.

By the time people who grew up with Connor, Wally, Kyle, Connor and Cassie are old enough to be in charge at DC, I think I might be too old to care!

      3. Maybe, but that shouldn’t be the case. It’s a damn shame that we have to deal with such drastic shifts in creative and editorial teams in which that’s the case.

  2. What the heck even happened to Conner? I have this vague memory of Winick writing a Green Arrow/Black Canary book after they got married, and he killed Conner off in some incredibly cheap, pure shock-value way, but then undid it almost immediately.

(I feel like Winick did that at the end of every issue of that series. Some big surprise whether it made any sense of not, like Ollie being replaced with a shapeshifter on his wedding day and being kept prisoner by Amazons?)

    1. Yep, that’s pretty much it – Winick’s Arrow/Canary run killed off Conner by about issue 8 (after Ollie had been rescued from the Amazons) and then brought back in a, shall we say, brain damaged state and I think he was shipped back to the Ashram.

With the exception of the Earth-2 version, I don’t think we’ve seen him since about 2010 or so.
